Georgia Games: Pleasant Weather, Sparse Attendance

By Tish Gorman - July 22, 2000

"Efficient" and "cool" are the two best words to describe the execution of the 10th annual GA Games inline skating competition at Piedmont Park. Starting about 10 minutes early and under perfect skating conditions: overcast skies and mid-seventies, the competition began in Piedmont Park with the 5K races. GT Skater, Jon Scott surprised the field and, working with teammate Christy Brookshire, came in 1st and 2nd respectively with a good time of 14 minutes 30 seconds.

Due to a construction permit in the park set for 9am, the officials also started the 10K race early, causing some competitors to sprint from their warm-ups to join the race. The race was a quick two times around Piedmont Park, but afforded the spectators a good view of the all parts of the race. There was an early break-away which was never caught, by three members of the Peachtree Rollers. However, GT's training partner Corbett Griffith had a strong finish and came in 4th. Jono Gorman finished 6th overall with a time of 20 minutes 6 seconds. Katie Heffelfinger surprised Greg Gorman with a sprint around a big guy at the end and edged him at the line. Katie's time was 24:40 and Greg's 24:41. Katie finished first in her age group and Greg was second behind his brother.

Awards were given out in record time and within a half hour of the finish, everything was wrapping up. Congratulations to everyone who came out to a beautiful Saturday morning in the Park.

In the 5K race, Jon Scott finished 1st among the boys 10-12 and Christy Brookshire was 1st among the 15 year old girls

In the 10K race, Jono and Gregory Gorman finished 1st and 2nd in the 10-12 boys. Katie Heffelfinger was 1st in the 10-12 girls.
