Fright Fest in Pensacola

By Tish Gorman - October 29, 2001

We had bleeding masks, spider ladies, pink ladies, kittycats, and monsters of all types at this year's annual Halloween Party at the Reidell/Landmark Halloween Invitational. The party was the best ever. Over 50 kids Elementary and below joined in the festivities and as you can tell from the pictures, even some of the parents and coaches got into the act.

The Senior skaters helped out by passing out pizza and organizing games. This year, the (bubble gum) bubble-blowing contest, organized by Ryan Cox, was a big success. The bubbles were so big that the judges had trouble deciding who was the winner and ended up awarding two prizes. Check out the cute "baby bubble" blown by just-promoted tiny-tot Torre Smith.

The "hot potato ball" contest was played in the dark with about 25 kids trying not to be caught with the ball when the lights went on. Talk about scary in that dark room with all those monsters roaming about! The costume contest was harder than ever this year, but we finally narrowed it down to 1st , 2nd and 3rd. We are, after all, skaters, so we had to award all three placements!

Perhaps the highlight of the party was the opportunity to create a live mummy out of toilet paper for the Senior skaters. Who were the dummies, ah, models, for these works of art? Well, we wouldn't have been nearly as successful creating our live mummies if we didn't have coaches Jim Blair, Richard Hawkins and David Downing to assist us. As you can see from the pictures below, the coaches were great sports and seemed to enjoy it as much as the Elementary and below skaters who indicated with their applause who created the best mummy. However, payback is in the works. David was overheard telling several senior skaters that practice was going to be twice as hard in the coming months!

Thanks so much to all the parents and others who participated, but especially to Donna & Phil Scott, Sue Rowe, Claire Rookard and Theresa Lobo who really put it all together at the end!
