Good Weather, Great Racing and a Perfect Relay TagBy Gary Heffelfinger - September 4, 2000
Skaters--and runners too, perhaps--could hardly have asked for a better day for the running of this year's US 10K Classic. The weather was cool and the roads were dry. If there was a downside to the day it was the high humidity, but since the skaters got such an early start, it likely didn't come into play. The announcers always seem to be amazed at the speeds of the skaters and this year was no exception. We got a great show. After a mere 16 minutes and 54 seconds, five skaters came blazing across the line, virtually abreast. Thankfully the Champion Chip was there to help sort it out. In the end, a textbook relay tag, propelled Fourth Lacey over the line in front of Harry Vogel, old man Rodney Green, Matt Halbreich, and GT's Ryan Cox. GT's ladies came through with a great showing. Erin Vanyo took first among the women with Kim Darnell at her heels. Kacey Huntington finished a mere 2 seconds behind them. The chart below lists the considerable achievements of GT Skaters (and a few friends). US 10K Classic Results
